What is the Dignity Index?
The Dignity Index is an eight-point scale that measures how political language either promotes dignity or expresses contempt. It focuses on the words used, not the person speaking.
Developed with researchers from the University of Utah, the Index was first tested in Utah’s congressional races by analyzing campaign speeches, ads, and social media posts. It helped identify messages that built understanding and those that fueled division.
By raising awareness of how language shapes public life, the Index encourages more thoughtful and respectful dialogue.

How It Works
The Index scores statements from one to eight. Lower scores reflect contempt or division. Higher scores show empathy, respect, and a willingness to engage
Trained raters use a clear rubric that looks at tone, intent, and the likely impact of each message. This process ensures fairness, while recognizing the nuance of political speech.
Real-World Impact
The Dignity Index is already influencing how candidates, voters, educators, and journalists approach public conversation.
Candidates who use dignified language can build trust and inspire engagement. Teachers are helping students understand the power of respectful speech. Reporters are using the Index to cover issues in ways that promote clarity without deepening conflict.
This tool does not discourage strong opinions. It encourages people to express them in ways that allow for progress.

Be Part of the Solution
The Dignity Index is more than a scoring system. It’s a call to raise the standard for how we speak & listen.
